Tropospheric bromine monoxide (BrO)

The GOME BrO Level-2 Product

The GOME BrO Level-2 Product consists in a collection of ASCII files resulting from the BrO evaluation of GOME orbits using the BIRA-IASB DOAS program, WinDOAS.

The following information is provided :

  • the date and time in the YYYYMMDDhhmmss format;
  • the pixel number;
  • the scan position of the pixel (ECWB);
  • the geolocation coordinates at the 4 corners of the pixel;
  • the solar zenith angle measured at pixel center;
  • BrO vertical columns, slant columns and standard deviations in units of 1e13 molec/cm2.
Last GOME processing: Reprocessing of the whole GOME data set in November 2003. See the GOME BrO retrieval page for further information.

The SCIAMACHY BrO Level-2 Product

The SCIAMACHY BrO Level-2 product consists in the bromine monoxyde slant column and vertical column densities retrieved for each ground pixel of the nadir observations of SCIAMACHY using the DOAS technique. The data delivery is limited to observations at solar zenith angles less than or equal to 80 degrees. In the current stage of the product, BrO vertical columns are derived using stratospheric AMFs (the tropospheric BrO content is assumed negligible).

The product is delivered as a collection of ASCII files. There is one entry per ground pixel (all geolocation data are provided), one level-2 file per level-1 file.

In each of these files, the following information is provided:

  • the measurement UTC time as YYYYMMDDhhmmss.mmm
  • the orbit number, the state id and the pixel id (0=forward, 3=backscan);
  • the geolocation coordinates at the 4 corners of the pixel and at the center of the pixel;
  • the solar zenith, viewing zenith and relative azimuth angles;
  • BrO vertical columns (VCD), slant columns (SCD) and standard deviations (SCDE) in units of 1e13 molec/cm2;
  • the Air mass factor (AMF) used to calculate vertical columns;
  • the RMS of the DOAS fit (RMS)
Last SCIAMACHY processing:

Near-real time processing since January 2007.
For further information on the DOAS technique used to retrieve the slant columns, see the Algorithm Description Document.
For a better description of the Level-2 data files, see the Product Specification Document.
